Leylah Fernandez has a new coach and the new coach has a pretty lofty goal in mind for the polarizing Canadian after a lacklustre year and injuries.
Fernandez did not play badly when she did play last year making a deep run at Roland Garros but the injury completely derailed her year. It kept her out for a few months and when she returned it was a struggle to get to a very good rhythm. The expectations heading into next year are pretty big with a top 10 goal.
Her new coach Julian Alonso confirmed that in an interview with Punto de Break:
"The objective is to finish very high next year, but without
obsessing over the numbers. She [Leylah Fernandez] wants to compete and
be among the best, which is normal for someone who has already been in
the top 15. We haven't talked about ranking goals, but reaching the top 10 would be consistent with the potential she has."
