After beating Gauff and Pegula in the previous round in a match that featured some controversy, Fernandez and Saville were not able to do the same.
They faced Dalma Galfi and Bernarda Pera, a pairing that hasn't played together before but one that clicked nicely on the court. They demonstrated it quite well and getting support from the crowd, as Pera represents America, also helped.
They jumped out to an early lead in the match being up 5-1 and serving for the set. However, Gauff and Saville then began an incredible comeback finally hitting their shots the way they can. They battled all the way to 6-5 setting themselves up to serve for the set but failed to do so sending us into the tiebreak.
Fernandez and Saville were able to take it 7-5 in a spectacular fashion. The 2nd set featured much-improved play by the American/Hungarian combination as they fought hard to stay in the match. After fending off some early break points, they rolled towards the 6-3 finish. The final set featured some more superb play by both pairings as Fernandez and Saville took the early 2-0 lead.
They gave it back not long after and we went into the championship tiebreak. First to ten wins but ultimately we needed 22 points to finish off the match. Galfi and Pera scored the huge win 12-10 in the final set tiebreak.
