Only one person (non-player) tested positive for COVID-19 at the Western & Southern Open and the USTA quickly reacted.
Although the ATP & WTA Tours are getting into full swing again, the Coronavirus still remains a threat. The Western & Southern Open will be the first big test for the USTA as the following US Open will be an even bigger event.
The preparations for the Western & Southern Open, which usually takes place in Cincinnati but will be played in New York this year, are also in a full swing and all of the people involved in the organization of the tournament are now being tested for the COVID-19.
From August 13th, a total of 1,400 people were tested with the first positive test coming today. The USTA prepared all of the safety protocols to make sure that everybody will stay safe in a case like this and the tournament will continue as planned.
"An individual (non-player) has tested positive for COVID-19 within the Western & Southern Open and US Open controlled environment. The individual is asymptomatic," the statement from the USTA reads.
"The USTA has worked with the ATP Tour and WTA Tour to create a controlled environment for the 2020 Western & Southern Open and US Open. The USTA, together with medical advisors and infectious disease specialists confirmed positive test result for an individual."
