The former world No. 1 Garbiñe Muguruza, announced this Sunday that she is expecting her first child after publishing several images on her social media, one of them showing her pregnant, another with her husband, and the last one with their dog.
The Spanish-Venezuelan star shared the joyous news on her social media accounts, posting a series of heartwarming images. These included a picture showing her pregnancy, a sweet moment with her husband, and another alongside their dog, a sign that she is fulfilling the dream of family life she spoke of shortly after her retirement.
Muguruza, just 31 years old, retired from professional tennis in April 2024, more than a year before this announcement. Her decision followed a remarkable career that saw her ascend to the world No. 1 ranking in September 2017. Her legacy includes two major titles: the 2016 Roland Garros and 2017 Wimbledon championships.
Beyond her Grand Slam victories, Muguruza's impressive résumé includes reaching the final of the 2020 Australian Open and securing eight other WTA titles, notably the WTA Finals in 2021 and three WTA 1000 tournaments (Dubai, Cincinnati, and Beijing). Despite stepping away from the Tour, she remains involved in the sport, currently serving as the director of the WTA Finals.

Love Story and family dreams

The pregnancy news arrives almost a year after her wedding to businessman Arthur Borges in October 2024. Muguruza has often expressed her desire for a quieter life post-tennis, a sentiment she shared in a May 2024 interview with Espejo Público. She spoke of a longing for "stability, normality, to form a family, to have a dog..."—a dream that is now clearly coming true.
Muguruza and Borges have a charming, romantic origin story. She recounted meeting him in the United States, specifically in Central Park, New York. "It was mutual love at first sight," she explained. "He was shy, and I had to bare my claws. It was tough for him to adapt to my life, but he has always accompanied me to everything."
Since the announcement, the tennis world has rallied to congratulate Muguruza. The well-wishes have flooded in from colleagues and former rivals, including world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, former coach Conchita Martínez, Spanish national team captain Carla Suárez, and recently retired French star Caroline Garcia, among many others.
"Congratulations 😍❤️So happy for you🥹," commented Aryna Sabalenka, as Caroline Wozniacki share "Congratulations!! Sending you all the best on this new incredible chapter".
Muguruza joins other former stars who announced their pregnancies shortly after ending their careers, such as former World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, who ended her career in 2022 to start a family and announced her pregnancy shortly thereafter. Another example is the Dane, Caroline Wozniacki, who ended her career in 2020 and shortly thereafter announced her first pregnancy—despite the fact that she returned to the courts three years later and is currently taking another career break mid-pregnancy with her third child.
