Linda Fruhvirtova was up 5-2 in the final set against Kalinina with a match point but the 17-year-old failed to convert that allowing her opponent to battle back and take the match.
Linda Fruhvirotva learned a very valuable lesson today as Kalinina proved that a tennis match is never over until it's truly over. The youngster played a really solid match to create a situation that plays out in her favour 99 times out of 100. It didn't happen though as Kalinina managed a sensational comeback in the third set.
Let's start with the first which Fruhvirtova won 6-4. She was actually up 5-0 but that set kind of foreshadowed what would happen at the end of the match. Kalinina managed to battle back all the way to 5-4 giving herself a chance to make it 5-5. She failed and the youngster survived in a set where she dominated.
Linda struggled with her serve in all sets hitting multiple double faults to get the number to 21 overall. The second set itself was pretty competitive with breaks on both sides but eventually, Kalinina was able to get it done 6-4. The final set was painful for Fruhvirtova. She was up 5-2 and had a match point at 5-3 but wasted all of it.
Kalinina battled and eventually wore down her opponent to take the final set 7-5. A major comeback for the Ukranian who is going to keep rising in the rankings.
