Coco Gauff and
Caty McNally were not able to complete the American dream of native
US Open winners as the upbeat duo lost out to veterans Zhang and Stosur.
A great warm-up for the men's US Open final happened with the Women's doubles finals where native McNally and Gauff hoped to secure the trophy for America. They faced the experienced Stosur and Zhang who were in sensational form ever since their surprise Cincinnati Masters win. The start of the match featured strong play by both. Eventually, Stosur and Zhang got their chance and used it to take the lead. They then won the opening set with 6-3.
It was a very close set but the more experienced duo served a bit better and were more sound on their 2nd serve. The 2nd set brought even more excitement as both pairs had early break points they failed to convert. The Americans were playing a bit better this time around and eventually got their own chance late in the set. They used it and proceeded to win the 2nd set with 6-3 to the roads of the native crowd.
The serve of Stosur and Zhang was not as good as before but the thing that cost them was the key rallies which they played worse. The 2nd set started off with the more experienced duo applying a lot of pressure on McNally and Gauff but they held firm by saying a break point as well. At 3-3, Gauff and McNally had two consecutive break points but failed to use either and Stosur and Zhang held on.
That missed chance proved really costly as the savvy veterans were able to carve out break points of their own in the very next game. They converted the first one they got to take a 5-3 lead before closing out the match with 6-3. A great run for the duo continues with back to back titles in Cincinnati and New York.
