Coco Gauff has done it again! Still, only a 15-years-old sensation from the United States stunned Venus Williams in the first round at the Australian Open. Previously, Coco defeated Venus at the Wimbledon and now she got the second victory.
On the first day of play, many of the matches were suspended in Melbourne as the rain started to fall down on the city. Just matches under the roof in Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena, and Melbourne Arena were played. Coco Gauff followed Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka as she earned the first victory at Grand Slam in 2020.
The match started ideally for the younger American as she managed to win 8 out of the first 9 points to gain a quick 2-0 lead. However, after not turning 2 setpoints in the 9th game and one in 10, she lost her service. And so the tie-break had to decide about the winner of the first set. Gauff kept her nerves as she defeated Venus 7-5 in the tie-break.
The beginning of the second set was again ideal for Coco. She broke Williams' first service game and improved her leading position in the match. Now, she led already 4-1 in the second set. She did not lose that later and won the second set 6-3. In the second round, she will meet Sorana Cirstea who defeated 32nd seeded Barbora Strycova.
