During the last few seasons, young players seeking to consolidate themselves at the top of the WTA ranking have exploded. And Coco Gauff is one of the first to made it into the top-10, along with the current number 1 Iga Swiatek.
The 18-years-old youngstar has won three WTA 250, the first of them at the age of 15, and now she seeks to fight for the majors. Actually, she was defeated in the 2022 French Open final by the World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in her first Grand Slam final appearance. The polishs is currently the stronger player on the tour and Gauff is one of the calls to challenge her
After beating the 20 years old Emma Raducanu (former US Open champion), Gauff spoke about future rivalries with another young players: “Emma is definitely one. I think we showed that in our match, which I think was a decent quality for the most part.”
“Playing against against her was a match-up which I know a lot of people were looking forward to and I hope we delivered the entertainment which everyone wanted. While there is also Iga Swiatek and Leylah Fernandez, who are a similar age."
But she also had words for other tennis players: “the Fruhvirtova sisters - Linda, who is 17, and Brenda, who is 15 - are just starting their careers and seem to have opportunities to do something great in the game, too. Another young player who has impressed me here in Melbourne is Diana Shnaider. She almost caused a shock against Maria Sakkari on Wednesday”.
The next challenge for the North American is against her compatriot Bernarda Pera, on third round of AO. Coco has a chance to reach the fourth round in Melbourne for the second time in her career, and keep dreaming to play a new Grand Slam final.
