During the last few seasons, young players seeking to consolidate themselves
at the top of the WTA ranking have exploded. And
Coco Gauff is one of the first
to made it into the top-10, along with the current number 1
Iga Swiatek.
The 18-years-old youngstar has won three WTA 250, the first of them at
the age of 15, and now she seeks to fight for the majors. Actually,she was
defeated in the 2022 French Open final by the World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in her first
Grand Slam final appearance. The polishs is currently the stronger player on the tour and Gauff is one of the calls to challenge her
After beating the 20 years old
Emma Raducanu (former US Open champion),
Gauff spoke about future rivalries with another young players: “Emma is
definitely one. I think we showed that in our match, which I think was a decent
quality for the most part.”
“Playing against against her was a match-up which I know a lot of
people were looking forward to and I hope we delivered the entertainment which
everyone wanted. While there is also Iga Swiatek and
Leylah Fernandez, who are
a similar age."
But she also had words for other tennis players: “the Fruhvirtova
sisters - Linda, who is 17, and Brenda, who is 15 - are just starting their
careers and seem to have opportunities to do something great in the game, too.
Another young player who has impressed me here in Melbourne is Diana Shnaider.
She almost caused a shock against Maria Sakkari on Wednesday”.
The next challenge for the North American is against her compatriot
Bernarda Pera, on third round of AO. Coco has a chance to reach the fourth
round in Melbourne for the second time in her career, and keep dreaming to play a new Grand Slam final.
