Emma Raducanu beats Tamara Korpatsch 6-3, 6-2 to reach the 2nd round of the #AusOpen. Solid match. The only time Raducanu lost a Slam R1 in her career was when she was... the defending champion (USOpen 2022).
The questions surrounding Emma Raducanu's injury were the main narrative going into her tie with Tamara Korpatsch on Monday morning but they were firmly dismissed with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win.
After a freak injury at the ASB Classic which summed up Raducanu's luck since winning the US Open, making it to the Australian Open at all was going to be a challenge but after feeling recovered pre tournament, this certainly was the case.
Moving well on the left ankle in question, she stepped into shots on the forehand and backhand side targeting the Korpatsch second serve effectively with only 20 percent of her points won.
After being broken early on, Raducanu shook it off making it 3-3 and winning six games in a row to seal it in just over an hour.
Next up is a tie to watch as she faces Coco Gauff who was even more emphatic seeing off Katerina Siniakova 6-1, 6-4 to continue her fine form.
Winning the title at the ASB Classic, she comes in as one of the favourites for Australian Open glory and it's easy to see why. Having never met before even at junior level, it is a first time meeting between Raducanu and Gauff but on Wednesday, they will headline the action at Melbourne Park.
