Hailey Baptiste has been one of the true stars of the breakout season but like Alexander Blockx yesterday won't be playing any further part due to a horror injury as the American went down during her second round tie with Xiyu Wang.
Baptiste had to retire on the spot. Wang was serving at 5-4 in the opening set and they had played a long game with several deuces when Baptiste stepped backwards and dropped to the ground in pain crying at the French Open.
Her dad immediately jumped out of the stands to try and help her but was refused by Baptiste herself. The American sobbed and asked why as the umpire came over. Medics were soon called.
Marija Cicak, the chair umpire called for medical attention and Wang attempted to check on her opponent. The umpire came back as Baptiste continue to sob and ask not to be moved.
The medics arrived and there was applause as the umpire and physio helped Baptiste to her feet but the 24-year-old still seemed unable to put any weight on her leg. Baptiste was still crying as she got a wheelchair and covered her face with a towel.
A horrific ending after such a great clay court season for Baptiste.
