Both Simona Halep and Elena Rybakina enjoyed a great 2020 season, and they proved their exceptional quality when they met at the beginning of the year in Dubai.
While Simona Halep entered the tournament in Dubai as the first-seeded and a big favorite to win, Elena Rybakina was showing great tennis since the beginning of the year and came to the tournament in peek form.
They reached the final where they showed a performance which didn't let the fans sitting on their chairs. Halep and Rybakina battled for two and a half hours and the match was decided in a 3rd set tie-break and it meant the title for the Romanian.
The match was nominated for the Match of the Year alongside Serena vs Venus Williams in Lexington, Aryna Sabalenka vs Coco Gauff in Ostrava and Naomi Osaka vs Anett Kontaveit at the Western & Southern Open which was moved to New York this year.

- I heartily disagree with Stubbs here. I mean c'mon! The whole idea of giving out wildcards is to give new & up-coming players a chance at getting as much circuit match-practice under their belts as possible. And this is a HUGE must and opportunity for these new kids on the block. Why curtail opportunities for these newbies in favour of stalwart monopoly?? That just isn't fair. At least give these lesser known players a chance to become more familiar at playing in bigger tournaments & give them also a chance of getting the crowds behind these underdogs.
