Elina Svitolina waited a long time for a trophy in 2021 but the Ukrainian player was able to add one to her cabinet with a triumph at the Chicago Women's Open.
Svitolina's season is enjoying a resurgence as the Ukrainian first won a medal in Tokyo before now adding a WTA title as well. It's something Svitolina needed as her season has been filled with inconsistent play especially a bit of events. Her opponent in the final was Alize Cornet and after the match Svitolina said:
"It’s never easy to play against Alize because she’s a great fighter, she puts a lot of balls back, and when it’s conditions like this, you’re not only playing against your opponent, you’re also playing against the conditions. So you have to be smart with this game."
And the conditions were at times brutal in Chicago with very warm weather and high humidity making it quite hard to play for players. Svitolina noted as much in her post-match speech but she was happy she came here:
"It was a good week here. Tough conditions the last few days, but in the end, I’m very happy I could get a trophy. It’s a good feeling. I came here to get some confidence, play some good matches, and in the end, it happened like that. I’m looking forward to New York."
Svitolina won a trophy, gained confidence and that will be a good boost foer her ahead of the US Open. How far can she go remains to be seen.
