The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is now underway where players from all over the world are showcasing their talent and battling to secure the ultimate prize.
The 29-year-old, who started the competition as one of the
favourites was just too hot to handle for her opponent as the match lasted just
one hour and 22 minutes.
In the first set, Pegula won 77 percent of points on the first
serve. In comparison, Giorgi won just 60 percent of points on the first serve.
She ended up winning 80 percent net points in the first set.
Other than that, she also converted two break points.
In the second set, Pegula was far more disciplined as she
committed just five unforced errors, 10 fewer than her opponent.
In total, Pegula produced eight aces in the match, six more
than her opponent. She ended up producing 28 winners, 12 more than Giorgi.
The victory will give Pegula a much-needed boost going into the next matches of the competition as she will be eager to improve her record in the mega-event.
Pegula’s best outing in the US Open was playing in the
quarterfinal last year where she was defeated by the current world number one
Iga Swiatek in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
