Jessica Pegula is hoping to get revenge on Emma Raducanu in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open after a surprising defeat in their last encounter. The World No. 4 is the only local player remaining in the women's draw and will face a rejuvenated Raducanu.
Raducanu has never reached the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event before. The 22-year-old player defeated three American players along the way, including her first win over a Top-10 player on hardcourt against Emma Navarro. She then took advantage of McCartney Kessler's retirement in the third round, and in the fourth round, she dominated Qatar Open champion Amanda Anisimova (17th).
This will be the third meeting between Pegula and Raducanu, with one victory for each player. The first match was at the 2022 Cincinnati Open, where Pegula won 7-5, 6-4. Nearly two years later, in the 2024 Eastbourne International, Raducanu came from a set down on grass courts to claim one of the best victories of her career, 4-6, 7-6(6), 7-5.
Pegula comes into this match having defeated players such as Anna Kalinskaya (32nd) and Marta Kostyuk (23rd) on her way to the quarterfinals. The American expects a tough challenge against Raducanu, particularly given the confidence her opponent is currently showing, as Pegula commented during her press conference in Miami.
“We had a crazy match last year in Eastbourne,” Pegula said. “I think we are 1-1 against each other. She is obviously much more confident right now. Probably likes the fast courts as well. Playing some good tennis. We all know she is a top player. It’s just getting matches under her belt so that she has the matches, and it’s going to be really tough. Hopefully, I can get some revenge for Eastbourne and get to the next round!”
Pegula had concerns about her physical condition after withdrawing from doubles the day before, alongside Ashlyn Krueger, when they were leading the first set 3-1. However, she seemed to be in good shape against Kostyuk the following day, and Pegula cleared up any doubts about her health in the on-court interview.
“Good actually. Really good,” she said about her current state of health. “Another reason I think it was good for the two straight sets. Having to do three on back-to-back days would have been rough. So I actually feel good, I have the day off tomorrow, so I am probably just going to take the day off and recover.”
