Serena Williams will continue her last dance US Open campaign after beating Danka Kovinic 6-3 6-3 in the first round of the US Open.
Four weeks away from her 41st birthday, Williams produced a solid effort to beat the Montenegrin in front of a packed Ashe on Monday. There was a big ceremony after the match held to celebrate Williams with the participation of Billie Jean King and Oprah Winfrey among others.
Williams spoke during the ceremony saying:
“I always feel so comfortable on this court. When I step on the court I just want to do the best I can. The crowd was crazy. It really helped pull me through. It’s been such a hard decision. Because when you’re passionate about something, love something so much it’s hard to walk away. I was just like all right, now’s the time. There’s other chapters in life."
She added:
"I’s going to be Serena 2.0.”
