With several restrictions still in place in New York, 2016 US Open champion Angelique Kerber has suggested she may not participate in this year's tournament.
Although the US Open organizers seem bent on hosting the event in August, rapidly increasing cases of the coronavirus have put their plans at risk. Kerber stated that traveling to New York was not a priority, given the state of the coronavirus pandemic.
"As of today, I say quite honestly, I cannot imagine it." Kerber revealed. "I don’t think anyone wants to get in a plane and fly to New York. At the moment no one knows what’s happening and how it will go on. I have the greatest respect that I or a member of my team could be infected and we are stuck without knowing how to proceed."
The three-time Grand Slam champion has doubts about the WTA season resuming and running according to plan.
"Who knows, perhaps we will not play tennis in the next two years. It’s hard to say. We will also start again in three weeks." added the German superstar.
However, her sentiments were not shared by all, as evidenced by fellow WTA star
Daria Gavrilova. The Australian hopes to play, citing financial reasons as her main incentive. The former World No.20 has not played since last year's US Open due to injury, and the shutdown is affecting her financially.
"For me it’s important to make a living, to make some money." said Gavrilova. "We have a choice. Personally I like to know that I have an opportunity to play and earn, but I feel like the players just don’t want to make a tough decision and maybe would feel a relief if the tournament is cancelled."
