Aryna Sabalenka lost out in the final of the 2025 Australian Open and despite smashing her racquet and storming off before the ceremony, she returned to show great humility and her trademark humour.
Sabalenka was defeated 3-6, 6-2, 5-7 against the American who achieves her destiny of becoming a maiden Grand Slam champion. While the Belarusian will have every right to be annoyed given she was so close to a historic three peat.
She spoke afterwards and said that it was her team's fault who usually get the brunt of jokes whether good or bad during the ceremonies with Jason Stacy famously always having his head signed by Sabalenka. But as she glared at the winners trophy and said maybe next year, she had time to praise Keys.
"It's ok I hope I will see you all next year. First of all, I mean Madison wow what a tournament. You've been fighting really hard to get this trophy. You played unbelievable tennis, you crushed it tonight. Congrats to your team, really well deserved. Enjoy the celebration, enjoy the really fun part," said Sabalenka.
"I really feel like home every time I’m here, even though I didn’t get it this year, I’ll come back stronger and I’ll do my best next year."
"I mean should I say anything to my team. Why are you laughing? As always that's your fault guys. I don't want to see you for the next week. I really hate you. Thank you so much for everything you do for me and bla bla. I think we did our best, just Madison was playing incredible. I really couldn't do anything in this match and next time I play against Madison. I will bring better tennis, sending love to my team. I love you even though we lost."
