Iga Swiatek lost her first WTA Finals match against Maria Sakkari and the Polish player took the defeat very hard.
Swiatek is rather known as a very emotional player who sometimes allows her emotions to get the better of her. No shame in that of course, but she did get a time warning in the final game of the match when she broke down and cried midway through the game. Sakkari as an older player was understanding of that and offer her opponent a hug and words of encouragement after the match.
Swiatek herself commented on the situation in her post-match press conference saying:
"I was just frustrated and sad that I could not overcome the stress. I keep, like, forgetting that I still have time to learn how to do that because playing in the finals for me, it feels like I know a lot about sports, which is maybe not true because still, I haven't been in many situations in those moments."
She further said:
"When I forget this is new for me, still it's okay to lose some matches because of the stress. For me, it felt like it's a big deal and I'm feeling a little bit ashamed that my level was like that. So I was just feeling pretty sad."
