Alizé
Cornet responded to the criticism following a "moonball rally" with
Viktoriya Tomova in 2023 Internationaux Strasbourg.
The French
player made her debut in the WTA 250 Strasbourg tournament against Bulgarian
Tomova. Cornet won the first set but struggled to maintain her dominance and
her serving percentage dropped significantly. In fact, she committed 13 double
faults and gave away 17 break point opportunities to her opponent throughout
the match.
Tomova
ultimately won the match 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, and the match had moments of tension
before concluding. With Tomova serving for the match (at 5-3), the players
engaged in a 38-shot rally with a significant number of "moonballs"
in an exchange that Cornet eventually won. Although she managed to break back
and level the score at 5-5, a new break by the world No. 71 secured her passage
to the next round.
After
receiving criticism from fans regarding the particular rally, Cornet responded
to a comment on Twitter.
“They
deserve to be fined for this point,” the fan wrote.
"Sorry
to hurt your tennis sensibility on this one and only point of the match but I
guess you're just doing what you can after 3 HOURS of match," Cornet respond.
After being
eliminated in the first round, Cornet is traveling to France to compete in the
French Open, where she has reached the second round on four occasions.
