While several athletes are complaining about the high temperatures at the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris, Greek tennis star Maria Sakkari acknowledged her love for the heatwave.
Just days after the opening ceremony in Paris was drowned in endless rain, the French capital on Monday was sweltering with temperatures in the shade hitting 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). With Tuesday's temperatures forecast to be around 37 C (98 F) in the shade, the heat on the clay courts is likely to push that even higher for the players.
The World No.8 has showed little signs of discomfort in either of her two singles matches thus far. Sakkari dismissed Montenegro's Danka Kovinic 6-0 6-1 in the opening round, before taking out China's Yuan Yue 6-2 6-1 in the second round.
"It was the best conditions I can play, especially on a clay court. I loved it," Sakkari told reporters after her match. "You know, it was so hot. I hope it gets even hotter. So the hotter it gets, the better it is."
The 29-year old is also representing her country in the women's doubles event, and teamed with compatriot Stefanos Tsitsipas in the mixed doubles tournament. However, the Greek duo fell in the opening round to the Dutch mixed team of Wesley Koolhof and Demi Schuurs.
