Paula Badosa upset native Coco Gauff 6-2 6-2 thanks to a brilliant performance in very windy conditions that bothered both.
Paula Badosa is enjoying a breakout year on the tour and another great performance yesterday cemented that. Coco Gauff did not play a very good match today and the youngster failed to adapt to the very tough conditions with a lot of wind. It made it even harder to hit through their opponents on the extremely slow courts during the night.
Badosa spoke of the conditions as well saying:
"The conditions were tough today. It was a tough day. A lot of wind. So, I knew I had to stay very solid, and that's what I did."
She then turned to what troubled Gauff noting she was off from the start:
"Sometimes when you don't have a good feeling from the beginning, it's tough. I think that's what happened to her, and I played quite well and I stayed very focused and solid, and I think that was the key to the match."
She then noted her special connection with America as she was born in New York. She said:
“I love to play in the U.S. As you know, I’m half American, so I feel like home here.”
