Daniil Medvedev advanced to the National Bank Open Toronto final after defeating
John Isner 6-2 6-3 in just 55 minutes.
Medvedev dominated on both return and serve against Isner who simply did not have a solution for the Russian. It was a great display from Medvedev who was well prepared for Isner and he converted his plan to perfection. After the match Medvedev said:
“I was playing great today. I think I almost did no unforced errors. I’m really happy with my game at this moment. I always like coming to the US Open
Series. I always feel like I’m playing better and better the more the series continues. I’m really happy that I’m still in the Toronto
the tournament, that’s the main [thing].”
The Russian played his best match at the event against Isner breaking him 4 times in 8 service games for the American. Medvedev also won over 50 % of points on return. Asked about his mentality ahead of the match he just said:
"I had to take this opportunity, just try to break as many times as I can, stay focused and I managed to do it. I’m really happy with the win today."
Medvedev will need that type of focus against Opelka as well. A very similar player to John Isner the American has played great all event especially from the baseline. An underrated baseline player Opelka is capable of hitting hard from the baseline as well as play on the net. However, Medvedev is prepared saying:
“I actually watched almost all of his matches. I think he’s playing great tennis here all week long. Today the match he turned around with Stefanos was quite unbelievable, a very hard effort.”
