Anett Kontaveit outdueled Maria Sakkari in a very good match for a spot in the WTA Finals and the Estonian is still struggling to grasp the reality of it.
It's been a crazy few weeks and months for Anett Kontaveit who had a brilliant run to even secure a spot at the WTA Finals. Upon arrival to Mexico, Kontaveit continued playing smashing tennis only losing a match that had no significance for the standings before outdueling Sakkari for a spot in the WTA Finals.
Speaking after the match she once again reiterated her disbelief at everything:
"I still can't quite believe that I'm even here and I'm playing against the best players at such a prestigious tournament. I'm just so proud of myself that I managed to do this and so happy to be competing at this level and just trying to take it all in."
Kontaveit almost did not win this match as she was a break down at 3-2 in the 2nd set and after she broke back she found confidence. She described it as a turning point:
"I think the turning point in the third set maybe when I went a break down, 3-2, just managed to tell myself that if this is the last match of the season, then I might as well enjoy it. I feel like I got some freedom from that and just started playing better and managed to turn that set around."
Speaking on what changed in the past few months she said she just believes in herself more:
"I feel like the last few months have really showed me that I can play really well, I can beat great players consistently. I think I sort of have this self-belief now. When I came here, of course, I had nothing to lose. Every time I step on the court, I still think I can win the match, just do well."
