World No.5 Elina Svitolina has joined the list of high-profile players who are set to miss this year's US Open due to the ongoing pandemic.
The 2019 semifinalist released a statement on Instagram where she thanked the USTA and WTA for attempting to host the event. However, she revealed that after considering all the aspects, she had decided not to play at this year's event.
"I understand and respect all the efforts they are putting to make it happen in a safe environment," Svitolina said in her statement. "But I still don’t feel comfortable to travel to US without putting my team and myself at high risk."
The 25-year old joins the likes of
Ashleigh Barty,
Simona Halep and
Kiki Bertens, who have all decided to withdraw from the event this year.
