Simona Halep avenged Emma Raducanu with a convincing win over Danka Kovinic 6-2 6-1 and she quietly keeps marching on in Melbourne.
Not many people expect Simona Halep to seriously challenge for the Australian Open yet her play has been quite astonishing. The Romanian player admitted feeling joyful while on the court which is something that has not been the case in 2021. It certainly is visible in her play as her confidence is sky-high at the moment. She defeated Kovinic 6-2 6-1 one day after the Montenegrin ousted Emma Raducanu.
It was a great display of tennis with Halep admitting that she thinks that way as well:
"It was a great match. I think I played good tennis."
Kovinic did not have the same level as in the match against Raducanu and quite possible was tired as her movement was rather sluggish all match long. Halep noticed that as well saying:
"She was a little bit tired and exhausted, but I'm pleased with the way I played. I feel good to be in the second week."
The 2nd week was certainly a goal of Halep and she will be ready for the challenge.
