Fans of grass court tennis can look forward to another event prior to the Wimbledon Championships, as this season the WTA will feature the Queen's Club Championships on it's calendar for the very first time.
Originally an ATP 500 event, the grass court tournament has expanded to include it's female counterparts, as a WTA 500 event will be held during the same time as the men's tournament. The combined event will be held at the Queen's Club in West Kensington, London, and is scheduled to run from June 16-22, 2025.
American tennis star Jessica Pegula was one of the first WTA stars announced for the inaugural edition of the event. The World No.4 is familiar with winning titles on grass, having captured the Berlin title last summer. In an interview with the LTA, Pegula expressed her love for the surface, and revealed there was great excitement in the locker rooms among her WTA colleagues as they prepare to compete alongside their ATP counterparts.
"Yeah, I mean we hear the guys talk about it all the time," said Pegula. "We were like 'they are so lucky they get to play at Queen's Club.' We hear about it constantly.
"I think it's really cool that we get to have a women's event there. It helps make the grass court season a little bit longer, which I like because it can be such a quick turnaround.
"I'm just excited to be there, they (the guys) love it. Literally all I hear is them rave about Queen's Club. I think a lot of the girls are really excited to be there."
