Leylah Fernandez lost the opening set 1-6 to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova but the Canadian was able to rally and win the match 6-2 6-2.
It's a much-needed win for Fernandez as she builds up her clay game after a solid outing in Madrid. The Canadian is not a natural on the surface but the keen worker will certainly put in the hours needed to get very good on the surface. Speaking about the match, Fernandez knew it was going to be tough:
"She's an incredible player and she's very comfortable on clay. I knew it was going to be tough. The first set, I made a few mistakes and she just took advantage of it. In the second set, I just wanted to play a little more freely, just letting go of my arms."
She continued:
"Even though I lost the first game, I think it helped me to get into the match. Afterwards, my balls were just going in. I'm just glad that I was able to keep attacking, keep being on the offensive, even though I was making mistakes, and I still kept trusting myself."
Next up for her is another Russian in Kasatkina who's also very good on clay. If she can win that match, she'll be in good shape.
