Ons Jabeur is a big name in Tunisia and with good reason as the tennis player is putting Tunisia on the map while also breaking tennis records for the country.
Upon arrival in Charleston, she sat down with the WTA to talk about getting back on track after a late injury last season troubling her for many months. Jabeur is famously known as Wazeerat Al Sa’ada back home which translates to Minister of Happiness:
“Yes, that’s what they call me everywhere I go. The first thing they say is, `You know, I wake up at 3 a.m. to watch your matches.’ Everybody’s also blaming me for waking up so early. Seriously, though, it’s great to see the support from the whole country.”
During that talk Jabeur admitted her goals moving forward saying:
“I want to win more titles. I want to be in the Top 5. Yeah, that’s the key for us. We’re trying to find every single detail to push for what’s missing for me to be one of the best five players in the world, and we’re getting there. We’re working very hard – we’re just waiting for everything to click.”
Fast forward a couple of days later and Jabeur is in the final with a chance to win another trophy. On that she said:
"For some reason, I love playing on this clay. It's always fun to play here. The people have great energy. Again, I lost in the semifinal and the finals last year, but I always want to get a title here."
