Simona Halep has decided to embark on the WTA tour
without a coach for the foreseeable future as she looks to try something
new by forging her way independently.
Following the Australian Open, the two-time Slam champion split from Adrian Marcu and Daniel Dobre having rehired them when she finished working with Darren Cahill in September last year. It was a surprising decision to many but Halep reasoned that she wanted to try something new. Her level was not bad at the Australian Open but she did not play up to her full potential either.
Speaking to the media for the first time since the split was announced, Halep officially confirmed the news saying:
“I confirm that I broke up with Mr. Marcu and Mr. Dobre, but I would
not want to discuss why I chose that. We didn’t argue. Nothing like that. We are and remain
friends. That’s how I felt it was better for me. They know why I decided
that, and that’s enough."
There were rumours circling that Halep might hire the former coach of Iga Swiatek but she denied those rumours explaining she will continue without a coach:
“I did not break up with Mr. Marcu and Mr. Dobre to start with someone else, that’s the idea. Now is a time when I want to take responsibility, to strengthen myself as a person, and I want to experiment. Let me see how much I can do on my own. ”
