World number one
Iga Swiatek has revealed that she will be rooting
for Ukraine’s
Elina Svitolina to win
Wimbledon 2023.
The 22-year-old suffered a shocking exit from the third
Grand Slam of the year on Tuesday after losing to Svitolina in the quarterfinal
with a score of 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
While talking to the media after the match, Swiatek revealed
that despite the result, she will be rooting for the 28-year-old.
“I think overall, looking at her career, having [a] Grand
Slam title would be pretty amazing for her,” she said. “She’s coming back after
becoming a mother. I’ll root for her, especially because we like each other as
people.
"I told her on the net that I hope she win this tournament. You know how
it is in tennis: it’s tough to win a Grand Slam. I know that for sure she wants
it really bad. So I will be rooting for her, yeah."
The result will be a massive disappointment for Swiatek who
was tipped as one of the favourites to lift the title this time around.
The Warsaw-born has now played four times in the Wimbledon
main round where her best outing was this year as she suffered an exit from the
quarterfinals stage.
Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam where Swiatek has a
win percentage of less than 70 percent, something she would like to improve next
year.
