Latvian Anastasija Sevastova had to navigate a tricky opening match at the US Open, but was able to advance to the second round.
The 31st seed stifled a comeback from teenage sensation
Coco Gauff,
prevailing in three tough sets on Monday afternoon. However, she had nothing but compliments for her younger, less experienced opponent.
“I wish I would play like this when I was 16 years old,” Sevastova said, praising her opponent in the virtual post-round press conference. “Great player. Nothing more to say. I think she maybe started a bit slower than me, but she was getting better as the match went on. That's so important I think in tennis.
In the end I think third set she played her best tennis. She was serving better, moving better. It was tough, yeah. Fortunately I stayed calm in the third set and managed to win, to close it out.”
Sevastova relied on her crafty style of play, which involved a lot of precise slices and shot placement to frustrate her opponent. Furthermore, Gauff misfired on several shots, failing to capitalize on numerous opportunities. After both ladies split the first two sets, the decider came down to Gauff having to save three match points at 4-5. However, an errant shot sealed the deal, as Sevastova prevailed after two hours of play.
“I think I had some mistakes. I was risking a lot,” Sevastova said of the tight third set. “But, yeah, she's moving so well, it's tough to finish the point. She sees the ball. She hits amazing backhand. Forehand for sure could be better. Still, it's uncomfortable to play her.
“I just had to stay solid and play better on my service games in the third set. That's what I did. I thought I will have a chance at some point.”
