Iga Swiatek continued her tremendous season by notching win number 50 against Sloane Stephens in Cincinnati.
The Polish player secured another straight sets win to get her Western & Southern Open campaign underway. It was the 50th win of the season which was impressive considering it's only August and there is plenty of tennis to be played. The last time a player won 50 matches in a season was in 2019 when Barty won 56 matches.
The most recent crazy stat season was 2013 for Serena Williams as she won 78 matches and lost only four. Swiatek is certainly on pace to book at least 60 matches and the 70 marks doesn't seem unrealistic either. Her form did drop off in the past couple of weeks hence why the victory made her happy:
"I'm pretty happy that I started well, both sets. I had some trouble closing it earlier, but I'm really happy that in those important moments I was able to refocus again."
It's been a while since Swiatke had a signature win as she choose a couple of earlier matches in the year as her best wins this year:
"Well, for sure those matches maybe in Indian Wells, those three sets against Simona and Angie. Yeah, it was pretty tricky, but also, at Australian Open when I could come back after losing first set, that really gave me a lot."
