Iga Swiatek played another great match to down Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-3 in the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells final and win the trophy.
It was a continuation of a great week by Swiatek as the Polish player was able to win a couple of very close matches early in the event.
After getting over that she got to the finals with some impressive wins that showcased her form peaking as the event went on. That culminated in the final against Sakkari who once again battled her own demons.
The Greek players has struggled in finals before and some of those mental struggles returned today as well. Her level was nowhere near as good as in the previous rounds and that was simply not good enough against Swiatek who has been one of the best performers this year.
The first was a very competitive one and featured a bit of nervous play by both. Sakkari broke Swiatek early in the first game but also lost her own serve in the next game. Overall we saw 6 losses of serve in the first s7 breaks but Swiatek came out on top of that mayhem. Eventually, she closed off the first set with 6-4.
The 2nd set was even better by Swiatek who was now in rhythm and firing on all cylinders. Sakkari played a bit worse as her confidence went down the drain after the first set. Swiatek took an early break 2-1 extending the lead to 3-1. She added another break later on and cruised to a 6-1 finish. The win sends Swiatek to a career-high ranking of 2.
