Coco Gauff levels rivalry with Maria Sakkari after another win over the Greek, 6-2, 6-4, advancing to the fourth round at the Miami Open. The World No. 3 had little trouble dispatching Sakkari for the second consecutive tournament.

Less than two weeks ago, Gauff defeated Sakkari in the Indian Wells third round — where the Greek was defending her finalist points. This time, Sakkari had a shot at revenge, but errors at crucial moments cost her dearly. The American’s next challenge will be against either Magda Linette or Linda Fruhvirtova.

Gauff races through first set

Right from the start, things tilted in Gauff's (No. 3) favour as she broke in the fourth game, quickly building a 4-1 lead with solid service games. Sakkari was only winning 50% of her service points and a meagre 30% on return.

The Greek struggled to keep up with a confident and consistent Gauff, especially in baseline rallies where the American’s backhand shone. A second break sealed the set 6-2 for Gauff after just 34 minutes.

Gauff turns tables on Sakkari

The second set began more positively for Sakkari, who broke early to go up 2-0, briefly sparking hopes of a comeback. However, Gauff immediately responded with a love break, winning eight consecutive points to level the score at 2-2.

Sakkari kept fighting, breaking again and holding serve to take a 4-2 lead, saving a break point along the way. Yet once more, the Greek couldn’t capitalise on her advantage. Gauff regained control, aided by Sakkari’s unforced errors, winning four straight games to close out the match on her first match point, 6-2, 6-4.

In the fourth round, Gauff will face either young star Linda Fruhvirtova or Polish player Magda Linette.
