Jack Draper suffers early exit against 19-year-old Jakub Mensik, 7-6(2), 7-6(3), ending a six-match winning streak. The Czech impressed with his serve, claiming a well-deserved victory over the World No. 7, who fell short in the third round.

A peculiar interruption marked the second set after Brazilian fans booed upon learning that Joao Fonseca’s match had been moved from the Grandstand to the main Stadium. Mensik overcame the distraction, securing his sixth win over a top-10 player (record 6-3).

Mensik edges Draper in tight first set

It was a duel of big servers, ultimately decided by who handled the key moments better. Draper chose to receive first and immediately broke Mensik, taking a quick 2-0 lead. The Czech, however, fought back and levelled at 3-3 on his first break opportunity.

From that point on, the Brit faced more difficulties holding serve. He saved a couple of break points at 3-4 but managed to push the set to a tiebreak. There, a couple of errors on serve cost Draper dearly, as Mensik comfortably took the tiebreak 7-2.

Mensik’s first-serve effectiveness stood at 86%, with eight aces, compared to Draper’s 76% and seven aces. Although the margins were slim, Mensik played the bigger points more effectively and deservedly claimed the opening set.

Mensik overcomes crowd drama to clinch the match

Things got tougher for the recent Indian Wells champion when he had to fend off four break points in a tense third game, relying on his serve to avoid an early break. Most of the opportunities in the set fell to Mensik, who strung together 11 consecutive points on serve, maintaining over 80% first-serve effectiveness.

A bizarre moment unfolded in the second set when it was announced that Ugo Humbert and Joao Fonseca’s match had been moved from the Grandstand — where Draper and Mensik were playing — to the Hard Rock Stadium. Brazilian fans booed, disrupting the match for several minutes as many spectators left the stands to watch Fonseca.

Everything went to a tiebreak without either player earning more break points. Just like in the first set, it was Mensik who showed greater effectiveness on serve, securing his sixth top-10 victory 7-6(2), 7-6(3). In the third round, he will face the winner between Holger Rune (11th) and Reilly Opelka.
