Emma Raducanu recorded her first win on the WTA tour and the British player admitted feeling relieved after doing it.
The win came in her father's native country of Romania at the Transylvania Open. Raducanu was in trouble in her match against Hercog losing the first set with 4-6 before storming back to win the next two 7-5 6-1. It's the 2nd match she played after her US Open triumph and the first she won making this the first WTA Tour-level win of her career.
Speaking on that she said:
"It feels like a huge win, to be honest. It’s actually my first WTA [event main-draw] win, which makes me very, very happy."
Raducanu also spoke about the toughness of her opponent admitting Hercog was a very tricky one:
"Polona’s a great opponent, and she’s really experienced, so I really had to fight hard to pull that one through. I thought that by the end of the third set, I was playing some better tennis, and the most important thing was I earned another opportunity to go and play better in my next round."
Raducanu will be able to play another match in Romanian and that is a mentality she adopted at the US Open, taking it one match at a time. In terms of today's match she once again underlined the need to stay composed when adversity hits:
"I think the key was to try and stay mentally composed. I just needed to keep going one point at a time. And I thought that if I kept giving myself the chance by holding serve, then maybe my tennis would improve and fall into place a bit better, and it did, so I’m really proud of myself with how I fought today."
