"It should be Simona Halep" - Darren Cahill on who should Open 2022 Wimbledon on Centre Court

Per tradition Wimbledon is opened by the singles champions on Monday each year however Ashleigh Barty has since retired making this a tricky decision.

There have been many speculations as to who might replace Ashleigh Barty as the player opening up the Ladies part of Wimbledon. Coach Darren Cahill who worked with Halep for several years wants to see her get the honour of having won the last pre-pandemic event in 2019.

He said:

"This should be Simona Halep. Covid wiped out the 2020 championships & unable to play last year due to injury so Ash Barty was given the honor. With Ash retired, the privilege and honor should go back to Simo. She has earned it as 2019 champ."

Cahill certainly has a fair point as the tradition would continue that way with a champion opening the event. There have been several thoughts about who might do it from fans with Iga Swiatek as the number one, one suggestion. Serena Williams as a legend was another suggestion. Halep never got the chance to experience the honour with the 2020 event cancelled due to the pandemic.
