“It was a surprise”: China No. 1 reacts after being excluded from BJK Cup Finals team

China No. 1 Xinyu Wang has broken her silence after being left out of China’s squad for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, admitting that the decision came as a surprise. The world No. 42 was not included among the five players selected for the tournament in her hometown, despite currently being the highest-ranked Chinese player in the WTA rankings.
The omission is particularly notable given Wang’s history representing her country in the competition. The 24-year-old has been a regular member of China’s Billie Jean King Cup teams in recent years, as she served as the team’s No. 2 singles player behind Qinwen Zheng during the Asia-Oceania qualifiers in the last few years.
Wang also played a pivotal role during China's run to the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup final, when Zheng missed the event due to injury. As the country's highest-ranked available player, she shouldered much of the responsibility in the knockout stage against eventual champions Italy, where Wang was narrowly defeated in a three-set battle against Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals (6-4, 6-7, 5-7).
This time, however, China will head into the Finals without its current No. 1 player. The team selected for the tournament includes Qinwen Zheng (No. 123), Shuai Zhang (No. 57), Xiyu Wang (No. 94), Hanyu Guo (doubles No. 10) and Xinyu Jiang (doubles No. 26), with China set to face defending champions Italy in the quarterfinals.

Wang addressed the decision on Instagram, acknowledging her disappointment while also making clear that representing China remains one of her biggest motivations. The Chinese player emphasized that she respects the team’s decision but remains focused on continuing her progress on tour.
“Being unable to take part in the BJK Cup Finals in my hometown was a surprise. Representing my country has always been my priority. I respect this decision and I am disappointed. My intentions remain the same: work hard and move forward,” Wang Xinyu wrote on her Instagram stories.

The decision comes despite Wang’s strong position within Chinese tennis. The 24-year-old is currently the only Chinese player inside the WTA top 50 and reached a career-high No. 30 singles ranking earlier this season, while also having achieved significant success in doubles, where she climbed as high as world No. 16 in 2024.
Beyond her Billie Jean King Cup experience, Wang has also represented China on some of the biggest stages, winning a silver medal in mixed doubles alongside Zhang Zhizhen at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her consistent involvement with the national team has made her absence from the Finals a surprising storyline.

Strong 2026 season continues despite setback
Wang’s exclusion comes after a season in which she has continued establishing herself as China’s leading singles player. The 24-year-old reached the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland at the start of the year and later produced one of the best Grand Slam performances of her career by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open.
During her run in Melbourne, Wang defeated Jelena Ostapenko and Linda Noskova before falling to fourth seed Amanda Anisimova. She also enjoyed an impressive grass-court campaign, reaching the semifinals of the Bad Homburg Open after victories over Leylah Fernandez and Elina Svitolina.
Despite those results, Wang will not be part of China’s BJK Cup Finals campaign this year. The decision adds another storyline to the tournament, with China attempting to challenge Italy without its highest-ranked singles player and one of its most experienced recent representatives.
