This year's Wimbledon Championships was full of intriguing storylines, with one of the earlier headlines being the return of seven-time champion Serena Williams.
The American had not played any competitive tennis since retiring in her first round match at the All England Club exactly a year ago, but announced she would be making her return at Wimbledon about two weeks before the tournament began.
Eurosport tennis Analyst Barbara Schett spoke on her best memories of the just concluded grass-court Grand Slam, and highlighted Williams' return as one of her favorite moments.
“It's always very special to be here for two weeks in Wimbledon," said Schett. "There's so many highlights during the course of the two weeks, but if I would pick one, it was lovely to see Serena Williams back.
“She just announced it about a week and a half before before the tournament that she was going to play. She hasn't played for a whole year, she got injured here last year, nobody knew that she was actually practicing and coming back."
Despite her best efforts, the 23-time Grand Slam champion lost her opening round match against Frenchwoman Harmony Tan. Nonetheless, Williams still showed that she could be competitive, taking the 24-year old to a third set tiebreak.
“Even though she lost in the first round, it was just great to see her - who knows if she's gonna be back here in Wimbledon?" pondered Schett. "She says she wants to play the American swing; she is such a champion and an inspiration for the game.
“It was wonderful to see her back and I think she's done a great job considering she hasn't played for a whole year.”
