At the WTA
level, Sakkari and Muchova have faced each other three times, all on clay, with
wins for the Czech player. Both players have had great battles on the tour.
In 2021,
Muchova defeated Sakkari in the round of 16 in a three-set match with a score
of 6-0, 6-7, 7-5. In their second encounter, the second round of the 2022
French Open, Sakkari was once again defeated by Muchova, with a score of 7-6,
7-6. Interestingly, they faced each other again in the 2023 French Open with an
almost identical score in favor of Muchova, who eliminated Sakkari with a score
of 7-6, 7-5.
After the
match, the world No. 43 recalled the victory she had against Sakkari in the
previous Roland Garros.
“It’s a bit
of deja vu, this match with Maria. It was almost the same score I think. I’m
glad we didn’t play a tiebreak & I managed to hold the nerves & finish
it in 2,” Muchova said.
In the
second round, Muchova will have to face clay specialist Nadia Podoroska. The
Argentine player had a dominant victory over the local player Jessika Ponchet
in her first match. The French Open is one of Podoroska's favorite tournaments,
as she had a breakthrough performance in 2020 by reaching the semifinals as a
surprise contender.
