Iga Swiatek held a question and answer session where she touched upon receiving negative comments after losses.
Tennis players are public figures and as such fans usually have direct access to them via social media which allows them to send messages to players. Many players have experienced the issue of getting negative and hateful comments especially following losses. Iga Swiatek is no different and speaking on the matter during a Q and A session she said:
"I have stopped for some time. Sometimes I see that I don't fulfil the expectations of fans and reading their comments is not pleasant or motivating. I'm happy that I've never conditioned my confidence on what is written about me."
She further said:
"I know that a lot of people cheer me on and support me, and positive comments prevail. Thank you."
It's a topic frequently talked about with WTA players as they seem to have more negative comments than male tennis players on average yet it's quite prevalent on both Tours. Betting is another key motivator for a lot of people that went in direct messages of players and that has been talked about as well in the past. It's an issue that needs to be addressed but it's difficult to find a proper way to do so.
