Daria Kasatkina, who had previously identified as bisexual, came out as gay in public last month in an interview.
At a time when her nation is increasingly rejecting persons who identify as such, Kasatkina felt secure in accepting her true self. In spite of being legal, homosexuality is a highly contentious issue in Russia. Additionally, it generally provides very little protection against discrimination with individuals experiencing discrimination on a daily basis.
None of that mattered to Kasatkina who was happy to shine a light on the issue in a recent interview confirming her relationship with a woman. The overwhelming reaction to the coming out was positive both internationally and domestically and she's happy about it:
"I don't know how the social media filter works, but I've just heard
very good things. Not just from the west but also people from my
country. I'm really happy about it. As I saw, it was not just a good thing
for me, also it helped other people. That's great and I feel great. I
feel happy about it and about myself and that's most important."
Kasatkina further added:
"Yeah, I feel more free and happy. I think I made the right step.
With the situation in the world, all this stuff that is tough, when if
not now? Let's put everything into the same pool."
