A couple of interesting matches finished at the BNP Paribas Open in
Indian Wells with different outcomes for two seeds, Muguruza and Jabeur.
Both matches started at the same time and finished within minutes of one another. Both went the distance and they saw Jabeur take down Sevastova 6-2 6-7(5) 6-3 while Muguruza lost to Tomljanovic 3-6 6-1 3-6. Both of these players are fighting for a spot at the WTA Finals and Guadalajara and this loss is a huge blow for Muguruza. The Spanish player arrived in Indian Wells after a trophy run in Chicago.
While the trophy was a good win for Muguruza it left her completely flat in this match. The Spanish player was way below the level shown in Chicago and that allowed a solid but unspectacular Tomljanovic to win the match. Muguruza only played the 2nd set better and she won it with 6-1 below losing the final one with 3-6. Overall a very shaky performance by the Spaniard continuing her hot and cold season.
Contrary to her
Ons Jabeur was able to prevail in a very closely contested match against Sevastova. After losing the final to Muguruza in Chicago, Jabeur came highly motivated to Indian Wells and that showed early. She played good tennis overall making Sevastova uncomfortable with her variety and tactics winning the first with 6-3.
The 2nd set was a close one but Sevastova was just slighty sharper. Neither served very well and that hurt Jabuer more how was down a break but fought back to force a tiebreak. In it she was beaten with 7-5 sending the match to overtime. Both played better in the 3rd with not many chances. Jabeur had a huge hold at 3-3 after a couple of deuces and lifted by that hold she was able to break Sevastova in the next game to clinch it.
