Ons Jabeur Madrid Open 2021
In a late-night encounter that saw numerous interruptions, Ons Jabeur upset defending champion Bianca Andreescu to reach the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open (Rogers Cup).
Jabeur prevailed 6-7(5) 6-4 6-1, requiring over two and a half hours to secure the victory. However, the match was not without controversy, as Andreescu slipped and injured her left toe in the second set. After clinching the first set in an intense tiebreak, the Canadian served to keep scores level at 3-4. While chasing a ball to her forehand, Andreescu slipped on the court and injured her foot, falling to the ground in extreme pain.
The 2019 champion was almost in tears as she walked to her bench to have her foot examined, and the home crowd assumed that the end was in sight. However, she had the foot wrapped and served out her game, sending the spectators into a frenzy. A rain delay gave Andreescu more time to recover, as play was halted for close to half an hour.
Upon resumption, Andreescu was able to maintain her mobility, but could not prevent Jabeur from taking the second set. The Tunisian relied on moving her opponent around the court, a tactic that paid off as momentum was soon on her side.
After another brief rain delay, they proceeded to play the third set with Andreescu holding onto her opening serve. This was the last game the second seed would win, as she was obviously impaired at this point but refused to concede the match. Jabeur won the next six games to close out the match, advancing to the next round after a spirited display by Andreescu.
