Jessica Pegula didn't play last week at the Billie Jean King Cup after a run of multiple tournaments. But the form certainly hasn't gone anywhere as she wrapped up a pretty rampant opener at the Stuttgart Open on Thursday.
Pegula has nothing to defend really over the next two or three months after defending Charleston points and not playing after that until the grass court. This gives her a great chance to become World No.2 potentially in the coming months if Iga Swiatek slips up.
Given her recent form, she could seal that spot by right as she wrapped up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Magdalena Frech to reach the Quarter-Finals. It is six consecutive wins for the American who will now play Ekaterina Alexandrova on Saturday.
There is no play on Saturday in Stuttgart due to Good Friday halting all sport so Pegula will return with a superb win under her belt and face Alexandrova instead of Mirra Andreeva with the former sealing the shock win earlier today.
Pegula picked up right from where she left off in the spring US swing and surprisingly it is her debut in this tournament. Coco Gauff is next up against Ella Seidel before Emma Navarro takes on Jelena Ostapenko.
It was very much picking up where she left off for Jasmine Paolini as she saw off Jule Niemeier 6-1, 7-5 to reach the Quarter-Finals. The fifth seed now faces the winner of Gauff v Seidel. That side of the draw is anchored in with likely a tie between Sabalenka and Gauff in the semi-finals.
While Pegula sits in the same section as Swiatek and Navarro who could face off at the weekend. Albeit it could yet be Ostapenko who is the nemesis of Swiatek so the Pole will likely hope it is the American.
