Jessica Pegula has accidentally found herself in the middle of a bunch of tennis drama ahead of the WTA Finals in Indian Wells. Her supposed private comments surrounding the World No.3 Mirra Andreeva have gone viral on social media, with her team and WTA intervening in the aftermath.
The WTA Finals will take place from November 8 and 15 with eight of the best WTA tennis players taking to the court against each other for one of the most lucrative and prestigious accolades to be won in tennis.
The round robin is very close to getting underway, but tennis is not the main focus at the moment. Unknown to her at the time, what was supposed to be a confidential chat between Pegula and her coach, Mark Knowles, unknowingly would eventually be peered on by millions of tennis fans.
After a practice session between the pair, Pegula went on a rant about the 19-year-old amid her attitude. “Conchita has always been very nice to me but I’ve lost a little respect for her because I think, like this girl. I think she’s a nice girl but she’s a diva, she needs to be humbled. She needs to be, like, put in her place. It’s like Conchita doesn’t know how to do it. Just stand up to her," Pegula was heard saying.
“If I was a coach and my girl played four great games. You’re up 4-0, and you’re mad at me and hitting balls at me. I would feel like, first of all, that’s disrespectful to the other person - you’re up 4-0, shut the f--- up. I feel like Conchita pokes her and eggs on her behaviour." She would also make contrasting comparisons between Andreeva's and Coco Gauff's mentality.

Apologies sent out as WTA reacts

This would go viral. A turbulent episode for the WTA, they have been forced to act quickly to defuse the situation and get the focus back on tennis once more.
They released a statement that apologised for having microphones on standby picking up every word. "The WTA takes full responsibility for failing to inform our players and their teams that microphones, in place to give fans a livestream of the players' practice, were active on the ‌courts at the WTA Finals," it read.
The move of having microphones by the court is a bemusing one when the players have been asking for more privacy all year. The conversation really accelerated at the start of 2026 after Gauff was seen smashing her racket following a poor performance at the Australian Open against Elina Svitolina. After trying to find a quiet spot, the whole thing was filmed by a hidden camera, exposing the lack of privacy the players have at times.
As for Pegula's response, a representative told The Athletic that they believed that the conversation was private and they were unaware of anything going on in terms of live streams and audio being picked up.
“(She) had absolutely no idea that her conversation with Mark was being livestreamed and certainly never expected a private discussion during practice to be made public," it read. The same representative also admitted that Pegula directly reached out to Andreeva and her team to apologise.
The duo are in separate groups and will not face each other until either the semi-final or the final if the stars are to align. Pegula's 'diva' comments may be a source of motivation if they are to clash for the surprising first time in their career. It would be ironic if they were to avoid each other all their careers and now meet for the first time amid this controversy. Pegula gets her campaign underway against Gauff while Andreev tackles Svitolina in her debut campaign.
