Jessica Pegula played in the final last year and she made a winning start this year beating Magdalena Frech 7-6(5) 6-3 to get her campaign underway.
Pegula didn't play a spectacular match but she did enough to cruise in two sets. Her opponent played a really solid first set after losing her serve early. Pegula held that lead for a long time but Frech was able to break back at the perfect time and send the match into 'overtime'. The tiebreak was a rather close affair but for the most part, Pegula dominated and cruised to a 7-5 finish.
The second set was a lot easier for Pegula because she played better feeling a lot more confident after the first set. Her opponent also didn't play as well compared to the first set and the combination of factors allowed the American to finish off the match in two sets. A good start for Pegula who looked very good on clay last year.
