Jessica Pegula finally won a major trophy with the American easily cruising past Sakkari 6-2 6-2 at the Guadalajara Open.
Sakkari played earlier today against Marie Bouzkova due to rain interrupting their match one day earlier. She was able to win the second set and avoid going three sets but it was obviously less than ideal for her. Only four hours later she found herself back on the court against Pegula and she started off comfortably.
A couple of strong service games for the Greek who was seeking her maiden WTA 1000 trophy as well. Unfortunately for the Greek trouble started when Pegula finally played herself into a good rhythm. Once she started hitting the ball nicely it was game over.
She broke Sakkari to take a 4-2 lead and continued applying pressure as the Greek folded. 6-2 was the final score in the opening set and it wasn't even the best that Pegula could offer, especially considering she hit her first serve only 52 % of the time.
The second set saw Sakkari continuing to struggle as Pegula jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and added another break not long after that. She had a chance to close out the match at 5-2 but proved a bit impatient allowing Sakkari to make it 5-3. She did not allow a comeback as she broke once more to finish it off 6-3.
