Former
world number eight
Karolina Muchova has admitted that she might have to go
through another wrist injury. The 28-year-old has struggled with fitness concern
in the recent past and has gone through a wrist injury to overcome a fitness problem.
She
returned to the court in the ongoing
French Open after staying out of action
for nearly two months. However, that return did not go as planned as she lost
to America’s Alycia Parks with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. It was only the second
time that Muchova suffered a defeat in the first round at Roland Garros in
six appearances. The defeat would have been a painful blow for the 28-year-old
as it remains the only major competition where she has played in the final,
which was back in 2023, where she came second-best against the former world
number one Iga Swiatek with a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Talking to the media after the match, Muchova shared some concerning news to her fans where she admitted that she has not been able to recover completely from the wrist injury and that she will have to undergo surgery in the near future.
“I
wanted to play here,” she said. “I kept waiting to see if my wrist would get
better. One day it’s better and then it’s worse, but unfortunately, I’ve been
in a lot of pain the last few days, so I couldn’t do it. I thought I had
a chance but it just wasn’t the case with this opponent. I have more time now
and can deal with my wrist. I’ll try to give it 150 percent and hope to get my
backhand involved.”
On the other hand, the result would mean so much for Parks, who, for the first time in her career, cemented her spot in the second round at Roland Garros. She
will face France’s Elsa Jacquemot in the round of 64.
