Anett Kontaveit had to dig deep in order to defeat
Jil Teichmann in the first round of the WTA event in St. Petersburg 6-3 1-6 6-3.
Both Kontaveit and Teichmann arrived in St. Petersburg ready for some tennis matches but neither was exactly thrilled with the draw. Kontaveit started off this match somewhat slow dropping her serve early on to give her opponent the 2-1 lead but also fought back to make it 2-2 immediately. Kontaveit saved another break point in the next game but by the end of the set proved herself as the better player.
She took a 5-3 lead and closed out 6-3. In the second set Teichmann completely outplayed her opponent as she took an early 3-0 lead and never looked back. She kept playing well fending off anything Kontaveit tried and piled up more games. She finished off with 6-1 completely turning the match upside down.
Kontaveit looked quite worried after that 2nd set because nothing she tried really work and Teichmann exposer her on the 2nd serve. In the final set, Kontaveit stepped up considerably, especially after a slow start the set. Exposing Teichmann and her 2nd serve, Kontaveit cruised to a 5-2 lead. She nearly finished it off at 5-2 but then closed it out with 6-3.
